Office Christmas Party Etiquette

It is that wonderful time of year again, when the weather heats up (in the Southern Hemisphere anyway), the presents come out and the drinks start flowing. It is the season of the Christmas Party and as Recruiters we have been to our fair share. However it’s very easy to get carried away so it’s worth a reminder about the rules of etiquette when you’re attending those fabulous Christmas Parties.

Appropriate Attire

This can be a little tricky for the Christmas Party. Everyone wants to dress up and show off a little bit, but it’s probably best to make sure you’re dressed a bit more on the conservative side, as it still is a business event. Try not to show too much skin as well, even if it is a scorcher of a night.

Let your hair down… but not too much

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love an open bar? Especially when you work in the Recruitment Industry. However, best not to let the reigns go too much, as you want to make sure you still have a job to go back to after the Christmas break. Enjoy yourself, but don’t drink too much that you go a bit crazy. You don’t want to wake up the next morning full of regret.

Food glorious food

You’re probably thinking more about the open bar rather than the open buffet, but if you’re hitting the bar, make sure you also enjoy the food. Too much alcohol and not enough food is never a good mix, however at the same time, don’t hover at the food table, make sure you’re getting out there and mingling with the other guests.

Keep your opinion to yourself

Whatever it relates to, the Christmas Party is not the time or the place to share your inner thoughts about your boss or your colleagues. Best to chat about people’s interests, and the positive sides of your work rather than complaining. At the same time, during your chats make sure you don’t share TOO much information about yourself, especially if it isn’t workplace appropriate. Technically the Christmas Party is still a work event…

Take a break from social media

Just remember that it is a work event, you’re out with your colleagues and maybe the big bosses, so it’s not the time to be posing for selfies with everyone to post up on your Instagram account. If your company has an Instagram page, post a couple of tame pictures, but overall put your phone away and keep it away.

Know when to go home

Again, this is a tricky one. If you’re having a great time you probably don’t want to leave, but just make sure that when you do leave, you are still making sense, you still look respectable and you haven’t made any enemies. Leave with your dignity intact. Generally the etiquette is arriving fashionably late and leaving before the party starts to fade. You don’t want to be the last one standing…

Overall, have a good time, but remember the rules of socialising and the rules of the office and try to stick to a happy medium.

This year the #metoo movement has come to everyone’s attention. This is a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault, especially within the workplace. It is important to make sure that you’re not overstepping the boundaries at your Christmas Party, especially after a few drinks as people do tend to let loose a little bit more. Take note of what is acceptable behaviour and what isn’t, and ensure you keep the conversation vanilla. Remember that it is still a professional event and even with free-flowing drinks (if you’re lucky enough to get them), you have to remember where you are and who you are with.
