The ‘gig’ Economy | Weekly Wrap-up

Rusher Roger’s weekly wrap-up report on what’s happening in the world of Rusher Rogers, our clients, our candidates and the recruitment market.

There is a lot of talk about the ‘gig’ economy, which is basically hiring expertise in for the life cycle of a specific project, so a contractor if you like (so very 2017), only rebranded, so very NOW.  Have we seen a significant shift away from more traditional permanent ongoing roles in favor of contract roles?  Not really.  Have we seen a shift towards hiring people on a fixed term contract basis in favor of temporary hires?  Yes we have.

As a specialist contractor taking advantage of a gig economy, the most difficult challenge can be suring up your next contract and the one after that.  Contract work can be all absorbing so by the time you have come back up for air at the conclusion of one contract, you may be facing some time on the bench as you focus on securing your next opportunity. It’s a tricky balance that requires a combination of business development and whatever your core expertise is delivering as a sought after contractor and keeping the two running in unison. So John Glover’s, the 5 C’s of contracting which appeared on my LinkedIn newsfeed during the week was very timely given the conversations that I have been having with some talented professionals embarking on their contractor journey:
