Off the back of a couple of great days exhibiting at this years’ Ethical Jobs NFP People conference and making so many great old and new connections this week has been truly action packed as we race towards the Christmas holiday season. Some of the key take-aways from the few sessions that we got to sit in on included recognition in competition within and outside of the NFP sector continues to grow with approximately 54,000 charities, 20,000 social enterprises and an increasing number of corporates investing in CSR programs.
There was a real and genuine focus on EVP (employee value proposition) AI, as well as recognition of a real recruitment shift:
- Recruitment of Yesterday TO Recruitment of Tomorrow
- Candidates who have a strong personal belief in the Mission TO Candidates who have the skill sets to achieve the Mission
- Salary is not why they work TO Salary is part of why they work
- Provide workplace training TO Focus on talent management
- Community service TO Community service with commercial intent

Some really interesting statistics gleaned from the candidate survey Ethical jobs have recently conducted around why people are choosing to leave NFP’s included the following:
- 24% leave because of low morale
- 22% leave because of lack of advancement
- 21% leave because of lack of organisational vision and leadership
Sessions dealing what the next big thing is in People and Culture for NFPs was way too brief with only really enough time to table big ideas at a conceptual level…. so many topics, so little time!
As I evaluate our own experience of where the growth has been within our own client mix, NFP’s particularly in the community sector have grown phenomenally. Change has been the one constant with a real shift in investing in the expertise of HR professionals especially on a contract basis to manage specific projects as organisations manage growth. Strong HR generalist experience with strengths in ER/IR, investigations and EBA negotiations seem to be in demand. With an emphasis on partnering and commercial understanding, being outcomes and solutions focused, these are in the top 4 qualities that we are asked to identify amongst this cohort.
Add to this more generally, what SEEK see as the emerging trends for 2019, it makes for an ever changing and challenging market place to keep one step ahead of.
